THE MATCHA STARTER GUIDE

Find your everyday matcha

Good matcha for a latte is matcha that tastes lovely with the milk you actually use. You do not need to buy the most expensive tin to begin.

Start with how you drink it

For a milk-based latte, look for a clearly identified Japanese matcha with a flavor description you enjoy. Richer tea flavors can stand up well to milk. If you also drink matcha with just water, consider trying a small tin before committing to a large pack.

Look beyond the front label

Read the ingredient list: plain matcha should contain green tea powder, without added sugar or milk powder. Check the origin, pack size and storage advice. Labels such as “ceremonial” are not a substitute for understanding the actual product.

Compare the cost per cup

Divide the total price by the grams in the tin, then multiply by the grams you use. For example, a $24 tin containing 30 g gives fifteen 2 g servings: $1.60 of matcha per drink, before milk. This is an example calculation, not a current product price.

Buy small, store carefully

Choose a small pack you can use steadily. Follow the producer’s storage instructions, keep it sealed, and protect it from heat, air and light. A smaller tin that you finish is often a better first purchase than a bargain bag you do not enjoy.
